Evaluation

Work Placement is over and done with. Was awesome and heaps of fun, got some volunteer work out of it so a bonus there.

Working on radio always has been appealing to me, cause i get to talk haha. It really wasnt how i expected it to be like, it was better and was really just heaps fun environment to be working in i think.

I gained alot of skills and knowledge that have really helped me see what i want in a career and helped me understand the industry of radio a whole lot more, and see it from a different perspective. I think just really learning alot of the basics in editing and just the way i can use my voice in different ways were the main focus of skills learnt but just the knowledge of how a community radio station works and runs even though it faces some of the hardest hurdles and relies so much on the goodness of the community and listeners.

I received a bit of feedback, mostly just regarding how i use my voice on air, and some pointers on what to fix up and the projection of my voice, but it all comes in time and alot of practice but it got heaps better as we went on and still is better yet now, listening from the first night we aired to now we are ten times better.

It really also impacted what i though of a career and my goals, i think someone my age usually is still searching and looking for the right career path, but working on radio really helped me to cement that idea in my head and put it into reality. It was great and hopefully ill continue with my studies at Uni next year and in the near future as well as begin to get the experience under my belt and hopefully finally find somewhere i can put all that together and make a career out of it.

I have gained alot, and learned alot, and i think by doing work experience and work placement really gives people that direction in what they really want to do, and it enables people to try new and different things in career paths. It was great fun and cant wait to see what radio in the future for me will be like.

Work Placement "On the Job"

Day Three......1st September 2009

So begins the end of my "work placement" experience for the year, but it still will continue just not in the form of work placement rather just volunteering to get some good work under my belt for future work in the industry.

Again a good trip down the coast, another day of recording some laughs ad recording some real work, have listened to the show a few times now of a night and it really has started to sound so much better then what it did the very first night it aired, i think beginning to relax and get use to the little techniques people have helped me fix up in my voice and projection.

But apart from that, had a big workload today trying to get an extra few weeks ahead so we can get some time up our sleeves. Was funny, had a few good laughs today and wish we did a bloopers real, really figured i cant say "says" i have to write in a script as "sez".

well it has been great experience and i will only get better with more experience and time.

see you later bloggers!

Work Placement "On the Job"

Day Two 25th August 2009....

Again a nice early start to the days work placement. Although this week my breakfast was provided =]

This week again pretty much the same as last week. Although took time out to change the really bad scripts we are given to read and make it sound more conversational on air. Recorded some more weeks worth of stuff, and had a go at editing our own stuff. Discussed future plans with Chloe and Myself at the station and the possibility of our own show of a friday night time slot.

Found out that alot of the people who work there come from a similar studying background as me. Alot of the volunteers too are studying alot of the same although most are into the production side of this rather then the presenting like me.

Another good day on the job...

stay tuned for next week.....

Work Placement "On the Job"

Day One....18th August 2009

First Day, Saw an early sunrise traveling down to Coniston to watch Chloe do the Morning News, Then start to pre-record our own segment "behind the music" which will be featured every weeknight at 9, where we basically feature a band each night and try to follow a set topic for the week.

The Radio station offer the services of free community radio/music and talkback to the public of the illawarra and south coast areas. The station is only a community one so it doesnt exactly have a hundred employees getting paid to do things, it really only has two head producers who get paid, and a list of volunteers who help it run smoothly. Its quite a nice little place/house set up in a unique radio style and is not what I first thought but is a really good place for a community station.

This is a great place to start my career in, and I hope I will gain alot of experience and skills to take away with. So we just started off with Shannon getting a background check on what this segment is and what we are allowed to say and not say in terms of legally and ethically (which is hard to do anything to bad seeming its all pre recorded and off a script).

So we got a basic tutorial in using the editing programs and our recording equipment, and recored our first two weeks of material, we try to stay a week ahead of ourselves in case of emergencies etc.

It was good fun, mucking around and just doing something that has appealed to me for a while and hopefully make a future out of it.

Stay tuned for next weeks "On the Job" post....!

Obtaining Work Placement

My first attempt of getting work placement was with Wollongong's Community Christian radio station 94.1fm. I contacted one of the head producers Shannon Moir on the 20th of July 2009 via his email posted on the website of 941fm. I enquired about the opportunity to do work placement there and volunteer as staff. Just so happened a friend, Chloe Skipp was working there and the chance to actually feature in a show with her and work together arose and so a meeting was set up via a phone call a few weeks later.

Work Placement- Obtained √

Work Placement will happen once a week to do recording and continue on as a permanent volunteer job.

The Meeting was great, just got a tour around the studio, listened in on live radio morning segment and then sat down had a discussion with Shannon and what he was like, what the station is like and its goals. Really just to get to know each other and see what ideas I had.
